Danielle froze, her mouth slightly open in surprise and her heart pounding loudly in her ears. He just…

For a moment, she couldn’t even process a thought. Her mind went blank as each beat of her heart filled her with joy. It didn’t take her long to come to the same conclusion, tears instantly threatening to fall. She almost had trouble smiling, she was so stuck on the words and the look on his face as he revealed himself. It felt like her cheeks jerked up in stages, but she was probably imagining it. The first tear that slid out of her eye made his expression shift, and she immediately grasped his hand tightly, nodding when she couldn’t get the words out at first. That seemed to ease his concern at her tears.

Smiling even as she cried, Danielle held on to his hand for dear life as everything hit her at once.

"I love you, too, Jason," she gasped, shoving her chair back and leaping to her feet.

He rose and caught her when she threw her arms around him, shaking like a leaf. "Don’t cry," he murmured, holding her tightly as she clung to him.

"I can’t help it," she admitted, face buried in his shoulder. "I didn’t see this coming, but I’m so happy it did."

One of his hands gently stroked the back of her head. "Me, too."

If two weeks ago someone had told her that not only would she marry Jason Moran but fall head over heels in love with him, too, Danielle would’ve laughed until she couldn’t breathe. Now she clung to him, struggling to come to terms with the emotion she’d finally put a name to. This was so overwhelming, she kept leaking a few tears into his T-shirt. She sniffed and tried to get ahold of herself.

"Can we do something today?" Jason asked, still caressing her back and head lightly. "I don’t want to call it a date night because I want you to myself all day."

"I’d like that," she told him, finally glancing up without tears escaping. "Like what?"

"I don’t know," he admitted, looking sheepish. "I haven’t wanted to spend time with someone like this in years." His arms shifted to loosely wrap around her waist so they could look at one another.

Since Danielle had to agree there, she couldn’t exactly blame him for not knowing what to do. There were plenty of romantic spots that got pitched to tourists in Aspen—it was a beautiful country. But it felt sort of pathetic to try and do any of those things, even if the view of the Maroon Bells was every bit as good as the tourist guides said it was. She slid her arms down around his waist, too.

"That was a rich brunch we ate," she began, thinking aloud. "Maybe we should go for a hike and find some quiet place to spread out a blanket and spend some time—"

Her cell phone ringing jarred her from her pleasant escape into a fantasy with Jason. She hurriedly looked around and found her purse by the door; she must have dropped it when she came in last night.
